India’s NFL announces fresh urea purchasing tender

May 27th, 2026 by Chris Yearsley / CEO, Head of Nitrogen

As was widely expected, India has returned to the market with a fresh import inquiry, this time to be held by National Fertilizers Limited (NFL).

The tender, which will close on 8 June, seeks up to 1.7m. tonnes of urea for shipment by 20 July. Bids are to be kept valid until 18 June.

This is the second urea purchasing tender to be announced by India since the start of the Middle East crisis.

The previous inquiry, held by Indian Potash Limited (IPL) on 15 April, saw 2.5m. tonnes committed for shipment by 14 June at $935-959pt cfr.

With few other markets willing to compete with India at these prices, the previous inquiry saw 1.2m. tonnes secured from the FSU and 700,000t from North Africa. The balance of material was provided from Nigeria, Oman and SE Asia.

The latest announcement has emerged shortly after China signalled its return to international urea trade and follows five weeks of limited spot liquidity and sustained price pressure.
