A new urea purchasing tender has been announced by Indian Potash Limited (IPL) with bids due by 15 April for shipments to 14 June 2026.
News of the tender will test global supply and increase competition for the reduced volumes available since conflict in the Middle East began.
The state agency is targeting a sizeable 2.5m. tonnes through the tender. Up to 1.5m. tonnes are sought for shipment to the west coast with a further 1m. tonnes targeted for the east coast.
The volume sought is greater than in prior tenders, with the shipment window extending to an unusually long two months.
The tender comes as India addresses domestic urea production challenges and seeks to build stocks ahead of the Kharif season.
With the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz limiting supply from the majority of Middle East suppliers, IPL will be targeting volumes from SE Asia, Oman, the FSU, North Africa and Nigeria. Shipments from China are not possible unless authorities change their position on export business.
While some product remains in the hands of traders, many producers in the east and west are committed for April, with some having extended sales into first half May in the past week.
Broadly though, little business has been concluded for May shipment onwards.
